Cash For Junk Cars LLC pays $500 to $20,000 depending on vehicle, same-day free towing anywhere in the Chicago metro.

Audi is one of the most common premium European makes we see in the Chicago junk stream — and for specific, well-documented reasons. The 2.0T and 3.0T engine families have failure patterns that push cars to junk exactly when the repair quote exceeds the car’s private-party value. When that happens, we’re the right call.

Audi in Chicago — Professional Market, High Repair Costs, Rational Sellers

Chicago’s Audi market skews professional and urban. The brand is heavily represented in Lincoln Park, the West Loop, Streeterville, the Gold Coast, the North Shore suburbs (Winnetka, Wilmette, Glenview, Northbrook, Highland Park, Lake Forest), Oak Park, and the western suburbs (Hinsdale, Burr Ridge, Naperville, Downers Grove). These owners tend to:

  1. Buy on 3-year leases and return the car, keeping the fleet young
  2. Purchase certified pre-owned off-lease and extend the car to 6–10 years
  3. Sell when the first major repair quote exceeds private-party value

That third group is our volume. A 2013 A4 Quattro with 125,000 miles that just threw a timing chain tensioner code is worth $7,500 private-party and costs $8,500 to repair. The math says sell. We’re the buyer.

This pattern produces a specific Chicago Audi junk profile: 8–14 year old cars, 110,000–180,000 miles, one major engine/transmission/drivetrain issue, otherwise cosmetically decent. These are premium junk cars and they deserve premium offers.

Three reasons Audi sellers do well in our market:

  1. Catalytic converter values. Audi 2.0T, 3.0T, 4.2L V8, 4.0T V8 cats carry strong platinum/palladium content. A full cat assembly from an S5 or Q7 alone can carry $400–$700 in precious metal value.
  2. Quattro parts retain value. Transfer cases, front/rear differentials, driveshafts, and axles from Quattro models are reused across the Audi/VW lineup — parts buyers know this.
  3. Electronics and trim. MMI head units, Bang & Olufsen or Bose audio, leather interiors, LED headlights, premium wheels — Audi trim carries resale weight far above economy brands.

Common Problems That Send Audis to Chicago Junkyards

1. EA888 2.0T Timing Chain Tensioner Failure (2008–2014 A4, A5, Q5, some 2015+)

This is the single biggest Audi junk pattern we see in Chicago. The first-generation EA888 2.0L turbo (Gen 1 and Gen 2) uses a chain tensioner that loses hydraulic pressure when the car sits — hot shutdown, cold startup, the chain has gone slack overnight, and first-crank engagement can skip teeth. If the timing jumps more than a couple of teeth, valves meet pistons, and the engine is done. Audi issued multiple TSBs and revised tensioner designs; many cars never got the update. Repair: $6,500–$9,500. Owner sells to us.

2. EA113 2.0T Cam Follower Wear (2005–2008 A4, A6, TT)

The earlier EA113 2.0T used a cam follower (lifter) for the high-pressure fuel pump that wears through and destroys the cam lobe if not replaced every 30,000–40,000 miles. Many owners didn’t know. Result: destroyed intake cam, damaged HPFP, damaged piston-ring lands when fuel dilution ran high. Repair: $4,500+. Common junk pattern.

3. 3.0T Supercharged V6 Coolant Pump Failure (2009–2016 S4, S5, A6, A7, Q5, Q7, SQ5)

The 3.0T supercharged V6 (CAJA, CGXB, CREC, etc.) uses an electric coolant pump that fails without warning. When it dies, coolant doesn’t circulate, and the engine cooks before temperature gauges respond. Result: warped heads, blown head gasket, cracked block. Repair: $7,000+. A Chicago 3.0T Audi with a cooked engine is routine in our junk stream.

4. Carbon Buildup on Intake Valves (all pre-port-injection FSI/TFSI engines)

Direct injection without port injection means intake valves get no fuel wash. Carbon deposits accumulate. Severe buildup causes misfires, rough idle, and cat damage. Walnut blasting ($600–$900 per service) is the fix. Not fatal alone, but compounds with other issues.

5. 4.2L V8 Timing Chain (pre-2009 S4 B7, pre-2008 RS4 B7, pre-2010 A8)

The FSI 4.2L V8 used a rear-mounted timing chain with tensioners that fail. Repair requires engine-out — $8,000+ at specialists. Most owners of 15+ year old V8 Audis facing this choose to sell.

6. DSG / S-Tronic Dual-Clutch Transmission Failures (DQ250, DQ500, DL501)

Audi dual-clutch transmissions have mechatronic unit failures, clutch pack wear, and valve body issues. Rebuild: $3,500–$6,500. Common on S-line, TT, R8 V8, and various A3/Q3/Q5 models.

7. Air Suspension on Q7, A8, Allroad, S6, S8

Air suspension strut failures, compressor failures, leveling sensor issues. Repair per corner: $1,200–$2,000. Full system: $4,000+. Many high-mileage air-sprung Audis come to us with suspension laid flat.

8. Oil Consumption on Various Years (2.0T, 3.0T, 4.2L)

Piston ring issues on certain EA888 Gen 2 and 3 engines produce quart-per-500-miles oil consumption. Cat fouling follows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

My 2012 Audi A4 with the 2.0T had a timing chain tensioner failure. Is it worth anything?

Yes. The EA888 2.0T timing chain tensioner failure on 2008–2014 A4, A5, Q5, and early B8.5 models is one of the single most common reasons Chicago Audis end up in our junk stream. When the tensioner fails, the chain skips and bends valves — engine replacement is $6,500–$9,500 at an Audi specialist. A non-running A4 with EA888 tensioner failure typically brings $600–$1,500 because the Quattro drivetrain, 18–19-inch wheels, MMI head unit, and body panels all have buyers. The wrecked engine itself has core value to rebuilders.

What about a 3.0T supercharged Audi with coolant pump failure?

The 3.0T supercharged V6 in 2009–2016 S4, S5, A6, A7, Q5, Q7, and SQ5 has the infamous electric coolant pump failure. When the pump dies, the engine overheats before the driver notices, and the result is warped heads or cracked block. Repair from dealer: $7,000+. A 3.0T-equipped Audi with a blown engine typically brings $1,200–$3,500 in our market because the Quattro transfer case, differentials, ZF 8-speed transmission, supercharger (rebuildable), and body all have parts value. Call with the exact VIN and we'll firm up the number.

Do you buy Audis with carbon buildup?

Absolutely. Carbon buildup on intake valves is a feature of direct-injected engines without port injection — every pre-2019 2.0T EA888, 2.0T EA113, 3.0T supercharged V6, 4.2L FSI V8, and 3.2L VR6 FSI has it. Severe buildup causes misfires, rough idle, and reduced power. Cleaning (walnut blasting) is $600–$900 per service. When an owner faces both carbon buildup AND another major issue, they usually sell. We buy these every week — the engines are still mechanically valuable even with caked intake valves.

My Audi S4 or RS4 has major issues. Is there a special market for S-line cars?

Yes. S-line and RS models have dedicated enthusiast markets that pay meaningfully more than equivalent A4/A6 base trims. RS4 (both B7 V8 and B9 twin-turbo V6), RS6 (all generations), RS7, R8 (V8 or V10), S4 (B5 twin-turbo V6, B6/B7 V8, B8+ supercharged V6), S5, S6, S7, S8, SQ5 — all bring premium offers because every major component has a waiting list of enthusiast buyers. An R8 especially — do not scrap without calling us first. We pay $6,000+ for R8s even in rough condition.

Why do so many Audis end up junked when they're only 10–12 years old?

It's a real pattern and the math is straightforward. Audis are built to premium specs with complex systems — direct injection, dual-clutch automatics (DSG/S-Tronic), air suspension on some models, adaptive damping, Quattro AWD — that repair expensively when they fail. A 2014 Q7 with air suspension failure ($3,500), torque converter failure ($4,500), and carbon buildup ($900) can generate $9,000 in repair quotes on a car worth $8,000 wholesale. Chicago Audi owners — downtown, North Shore, West Loop — tend to be financially rational and sell to us when the math stops working. That early-senior-citizenship of 10-year-old Audis is why we see so many.
